I find the estate tax to be something the government uses to "raise revenue" to fill gaps. And as the deficits grow, instead of finding ways to cut expenses, spend efficiently, reduce government waste, they just find more taxes. It would be great if I could go to my boss and tell him my expenses keep rising, so he needs to pay me more.
The relevant income being passed down has already been earned, taxed at least once -- the dues have been paid. And I can safely say that the estate tax will never apply to me.
Now that may be a naive viewpoint -- I couldn't expect these numbnuts to possibly cut government waste enough to reduce these or other taxes. So I accept that it exists, I just don't like the principal of continuing to raise revenue to plug gaps, without taking a look at why there are gaps. On principle, I had/have the same problem with the health care plan. No, I do not expect you to agree with me.
If someone who inherits more than $3.5 million has to pay a tax, I ordinarily wouldn't give a shit. It does bother me when a family passes a business down to their kids, and the kids have to sell it because they can't afford to pay the estate tax. Dad founded it, Dad earned it, the kids should keep it unencumbered -- the American way in my view.
